Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were settling the vicinity more than likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then was not reported till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a substantially larger area than just the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that's seen greater development in current times.
