Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to Roman times, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins stumbled on near by offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were dwelling in the region possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't discussed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a significantly larger area than only the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the ensuing years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen increased development in recent times.
