Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage discovered in the area show proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in around the tenth century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were dwelling in the vicinity undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The village existing then was not referred to till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a considerably bigger area than just the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put in up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop.
