Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage found nearby show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood quite likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not listed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a substantially greater area than only the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the coming decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few years.
