Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage found in the area give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who introduced the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were settling the neighbourhood possibly since the sixth century. The village existing then was not observed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a substantially wider area than only the town itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen greater development in current times.
