Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage found nearby offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics found reveal that they were inhabiting the vicinity undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a substantially larger area than simply the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't inserted before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing through the coming decades and the development of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen improved development in the last few years.
