Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins found in the area offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who were using a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were staying in the vicinity more than likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a lot greater area than merely the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the ensuing years and the coming of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that's seen accelerated development in the last few years.
