Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the era of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered show that they were dwelling in the area undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time is not described till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a considerably bigger area than just the town by itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't inserted until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen improved development in modern times.
