Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found next to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins discovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were residing in the locale more than likely since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a way bigger area compared to the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put in prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
