Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed indicate that they were settling the region most likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't discussed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a much larger area than just the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be added until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
