Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage picked up in the area show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the vicinity most probably since the sixth century. The village existing then wasn't discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a much greater area than simply the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't included till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that has seen greater development in the last few years.
