Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lays next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were residing in the neighbourhood most probably since the 6th Century. The village as it was then is not referred to until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a far wider area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be put in prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the coming generations and the development of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town which has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
