Found in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a story extending back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies near the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early relics and coins discovered in the area offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who introduced the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were residing in the locale more than likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then is not listed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially wider area than simply the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop.
