Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated close to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage stumbled on in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced a market during the tenth century, and relics discovered reveal that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability from the 6th Century. The village as it was then was not mentioned till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a much wider area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be included until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that has seen increased development in modern times.
