Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up show that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't cited until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a substantially greater area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't appended prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the coming generations and the building of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town which has witnessed greater development in recent times.
