Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage extending back to Roman days, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is situated next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were residing in the area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune existing then was not mentioned till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a far wider area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be put on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the coming generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen greater development in recent times.
