Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins unearthed in the area offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts found indicate that they were staying in the neighbourhood in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't described till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a way bigger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the succeeding decades and the construction of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen improved development in the last few years.
