Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a past harping back to the days of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located very close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were dwelling in the region quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a far larger area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be included till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed improved development in recent years.
