Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins found in the area give evidence of this. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune existing then isn't reported until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a far greater area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be included till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the ensuing years and the development of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen improved development in current times.
