Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled upon in the area give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts found suggest that they were dwelling in the vicinity very likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was isn't listed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a much larger area than only the town alone, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't included before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow.
