Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past extending back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is placed near the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage picked up in the area give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were settling the neighbourhood almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't reported until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a significantly bigger area than just the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put in before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the ensuing generations and the building of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town which has witnessed greater development in modern times.
