Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage stumbled on in the area give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in around the tenth century, and relics found show that they were settling the vicinity most likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't referred to till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far bigger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be put on until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that's seen greater development in modern times.
