Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it sits next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the region probably since the sixth century. The village existing at that time wasn't documented till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a considerably wider area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the ensuing decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen greater development in the past few decades.
