Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past harping back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up denote that they were residing in the vicinity quite likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a considerably wider area than only the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might possibly have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be appended before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the ensuing generations and the construction of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few years.
