Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is located next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were living in the area almost certainly since the 6th Century. The commune existing then is not observed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a far bigger area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
