Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a story stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early relics and coinage stumbled upon nearby give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the area probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then isn't discussed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a lot bigger area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the ensuing generations and the building of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen improved development in modern times.
