Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on indicate that they were settling the area more than likely from the sixth century. The commune existing then is not documented till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a considerably wider area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not inserted up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the ensuing decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
