Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old relics and coins picked up in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the region perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not observed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a considerably larger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not included prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the ensuing years and the building of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has witnessed increased development in recent times.
