Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a past extending back to the Roman era, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage discovered nearby give proof of this. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered imply that they were staying in the local area very likely from the sixth century. The commune existing at that time is not cited till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a way bigger area than just the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't appended prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming years and the construction of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has seen accelerated development in current times.
