Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed nearby offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up denote that they were settling the vicinity probably from the sixth century. The village as it was is not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a way greater area than only the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get appended prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the coming generations and the development of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
