Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the era of the Romans, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins stumbled on in the area give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who developed the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities picked up indicate that they were living in the area perhaps since the sixth century. The village as such is not observed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a way bigger area than merely the town alone, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be appended till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that's seen accelerated development in the last few years.
