Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins picked up nearby show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts picked up show that they were settling the area almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village as such isn't documented till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a much wider area compared to the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't appended prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has seen increased development in the recent past.
