Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage picked up in the area give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were inhabiting the area undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a way bigger area than simply the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name may have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put in prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding during the following generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that's witnessed greater development in recent times.
