Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage uncovered in the area show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite likely since the sixth century. The commune existing then wasn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a way wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get applied up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
