Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins discovered in the area show proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered mean that they were staying in the region possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as such was not reported till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a considerably larger area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen improved development in the past few years.
