Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins stumbled on in the area offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were living in the region possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't discussed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a lot wider area than just the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the coming generations and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that's seen improved development in recent times.
