Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to the Roman era, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage unearthed near by show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the region more than likely from the sixth century. The village as it was wasn't documented till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a much larger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be added before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen improved development in recent times.
