Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the Roman era, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage stumbled on near by offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time is not referred to until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a considerably greater area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not applied up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the succeeding years and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve.
