Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it lays near the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created the market place during the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the area most likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a much wider area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could quite possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't inserted prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the succeeding generations and the development of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town that has seen improved development in the recent past.
