Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who introduced the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were settling the local area most likely since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not cited till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a substantially wider area than only the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not appended before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the coming decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that has seen increased development in current times.
