Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical relics and coins found near by give proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts found reveal that they were settling the region most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not described till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a significantly greater area than just the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the following years and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town which has seen accelerated development in modern times.
