Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lies very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage unearthed nearby offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, came through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered mean that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood more than likely from the sixth century. The village existing at that time is not cited till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a much wider area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not inserted prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding over the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
