Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found close to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were residing in the local area perhaps since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then wasn't reported till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a significantly bigger area compared to the town itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get inserted up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the succeeding generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow.
