Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old relics and coins stumbled upon near by offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were inhabiting the vicinity in all likelihood from the sixth century. The village existing then was not described until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a way wider area than just the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get inserted until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the building of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and develop.
