Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins unearthed in the area show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics unearthed reveal that they were residing in the area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time was not discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a significantly larger area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop.
