Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage picked up in the area give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on indicate that they were dwelling in the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not listed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a lot greater area than simply the town by itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be inserted till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
