Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins stumbled on near by show proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed indicate that they were residing in the area in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time is not documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a considerably larger area than just the town itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get included up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
