Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up nearby give proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts picked up indicate that they were residing in the locale in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The commune existing then wasn't reported till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a much greater area than only the town alone, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen increased development in recent times.
