Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show proof of this. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on reveal that they were residing in the local area probably since the 6th Century. The commune as it was was not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a substantially larger area than just the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the coming decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that's seen accelerated development in modern times.
