Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a story extending back to the era of the Romans, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays next to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early relics and coinage uncovered nearby give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were staying in the neighbourhood most likely from the sixth century. The village as it was then is not mentioned until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a significantly wider area than only the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not applied prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing decades and the development of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop.
