Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies near the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity give proof of this. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who introduced a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village existing then isn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a significantly larger area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be appended up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
