Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits close to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins uncovered in the area give proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and relics picked up denote that they were dwelling in the region possibly from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time was not documented until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a significantly larger area than just the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
