The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage picked up nearby offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered mean that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite likely from the sixth century. The village as it was is not referred to till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a much greater area than only the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added on prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the ensuing decades and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed improved development in the past several years.
