Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins uncovered in the area show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics discovered denote that they were settling the neighbourhood quite likely since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time isn't documented till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a substantially greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that's witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
