The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a significantly wider area compared to the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put in before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese.
