Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it sits next to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical relics and coins picked up in the area show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were dwelling in the area more than likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a significantly bigger area than just the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't appended till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming decades and the construction of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has seen improved development in recent years.
