Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lays very close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage discovered nearby show proof of this. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered show that they were settling the area in all probability since the 6th Century. The commune existing then wasn't referred to until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a substantially bigger area than merely the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not applied prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the succeeding years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town which has seen increased development in recent years.
