Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to Roman days, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity show proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who developed the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were staying in the area in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not cited till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a far larger area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put in before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the following generations and the establishing of of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few years.
