Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to Roman times, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found next to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins found nearby give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities found suggest that they were inhabiting the local area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune existing then is not observed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a considerably larger area than just the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be applied up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the coming generations and the development of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen accelerated development in recent times.
