Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past extending back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were residing in the vicinity possibly from the sixth century. The village as such isn't cited until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a much wider area than merely the town alone, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not inserted before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the coming years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's seen accelerated development in recent years.
