Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman era, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins uncovered near by give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up show that they were staying in the vicinity probably from the sixth century. The commune as such was not listed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a substantially larger area than just the town alone, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be appended until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the following generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town which has witnessed improved development in current times.
