Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated near the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic relics and coins uncovered in the area show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the region more than likely from the 6th Century. The village as such was not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a substantially greater area compared to the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put in up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the ensuing years and the building of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that has seen accelerated development in the recent past.
