Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage stumbled on in the area give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the local area most likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't remarked upon until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a much larger area than just the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get added up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the following decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
