Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies very close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins discovered near by offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who created a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a substantially wider area than simply the town alone, and included the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be appended prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
