Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins uncovered in the area give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered denote that they were residing in the region perhaps since the sixth century. The village existing then was not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a far greater area than only the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be added before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed increased development in current times.
