Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the times of the Romans, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage found nearby give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered denote that they were inhabiting the local area in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a considerably larger area than simply the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't inserted before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the coming years and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that's witnessed improved development in the recent past.
