Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early relics and coinage discovered near by give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were settling the region possibly from the sixth century. The village existing then is not listed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a significantly larger area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not added on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town that has witnessed greater development in the past several years.
