Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage picked up in the area show evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were residing in the region quite possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't described till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a significantly greater area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the ensuing decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
