Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to Roman days, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins uncovered near by offer proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't described till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a much greater area than merely the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be included till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the following generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the past few decades.
