Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the Roman period, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old relics and coins stumbled on near by offer proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities found suggest that they were living in the locale in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't discussed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far wider area than only the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't appended prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the following years and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
