Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to Roman times, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is located near to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who introduced the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were dwelling in the vicinity almost certainly since the sixth century. The village as such was not observed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a significantly greater area than only the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not added on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the succeeding years and the development of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that's witnessed greater development in recent times.
