Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins discovered near by show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the local area more than likely from the sixth century. The commune existing then is not listed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a way greater area than just the town itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
