Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins uncovered in the area show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who introduced a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were residing in the region most probably since the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't reported till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a much larger area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't inserted up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the ensuing generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
