Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage picked up in the area show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were living in the locale in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a lot wider area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town which has seen greater development in current times.
