Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found near to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were inhabiting the region perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a substantially bigger area compared to the town alone, and included the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the following years and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town which has seen accelerated development in recent years.
