Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to Roman days, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins unearthed in the area show proof of this. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were residing in the area most probably from the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't reported till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a lot greater area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not applied before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the succeeding decades and the building of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
