Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the times of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is located near to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early relics and coinage found in close proximity give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village as such is not discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a much greater area than simply the town itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not inserted before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the coming generations and the development of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that's seen increased development in the last few years.
