Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman days, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage found in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, went through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the local area almost certainly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a much bigger area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the succeeding years and the development of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's seen increased development in the last few years.
