Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman times, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coins stumbled on nearby give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the local area undoubtedly from the sixth century. The commune existing then wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far wider area than only the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the following decades and the coming of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that has seen improved development in the recent past.
