Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around 37,000 and a history going back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins found in close proximity show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were dwelling in the region more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't listed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a much wider area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be inserted before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the succeeding generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few decades.
