Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins discovered nearby give evidence of this. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were settling the area quite likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not cited until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a much larger area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be appended till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
