Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins found in the area show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were dwelling in the locale quite likely from the 6th Century. The village as such isn't documented till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a significantly greater area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not included prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the succeeding years and the construction of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
