Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage unearthed nearby show proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts picked up show that they were residing in the area most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't documented until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a lot larger area than just the town alone, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the ensuing years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town that has seen greater development in recent times.
