Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage found in the area give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were staying in the local area perhaps since the sixth century. The commune as such isn't cited till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a considerably wider area than only the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get inserted up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the building of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed improved development in recent years.
