Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historical past going back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is located near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins uncovered in the area offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the local area in all probability from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a substantially bigger area than just the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name could perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be inserted up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the succeeding decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that has witnessed increased development in current times.
