Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins found in the area give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon indicate that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time is not referred to till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a lot bigger area than simply the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not put on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing years and the coming of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow.
