Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located near the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins picked up nearby show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't documented until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a substantially wider area than just the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may very well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be appended prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
