Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a history extending back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is located very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins picked up in the area give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the region most likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time is not observed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a considerably greater area than simply the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get put on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the construction of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that's witnessed increased development in the past few years.
