Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to the days of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The village as it was then is not documented till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a substantially larger area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't inserted prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town which has seen accelerated development in current times.
