Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is placed next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were residing in the region almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't referred to till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a significantly wider area than merely the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added on before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the coming years and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
