Located in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the Roman period, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't documented until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a considerably greater area than just the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following years and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town which has seen greater development in the last few years.
